Physical therapy focuses on musculoskeletal concerns including pain, posture, and weakness and assists a patient to return to optimal functional ability. If you recently had a knee surgery, you would be referred to a physical therapist. What about chronic neck or back pain? You would definitely benefit from physical therapy. What about growing an entire human inside your body? What about delivering that little human from your body?
Think of all the changes your body goes through during pregnancy! Your uterus grows 500x larger throughout pregnancy. Your center of gravity shifts forward drastically as your belly starts growing placing high demand on your back and SI joint . Your ligaments are like Gumby. Women go to SO many doctor appointments while pregnant but those are primarily focused on the health and safety of the baby. After baby… one appointment for the mother at 6 weeks. We need to take care of the baby mama and help heal the body from labor & delivery and the past 10 months of changes. You deserve to have a strong body again that allows you to do whatever you want! You should not have to accept leakage, pelvic or back pain, or diastasis recti as your new normal.
I treat clients in person in Arizona as well as 100% virtually. Arizona is a direct access state meaning that an MD prescription is NOT required for physical therapy services (with exception of certain insurances).
I start with an initial evaluation for all of my clients. We will discuss your specific concerns, your medical history, and your ultimate goals. I will perform a full body assessment including posture, breathing, and strength. If indicated, I will perform an internal pelvic floor assessment for my in person clients. Once we figure out what your body needs, I develop a plan of care specifically for you including a home exercise program (20min a day or less!).
The frequency of follow up visits really depends on your individual situation and needs. I typically recommend seeing a client 3-4 times during pregnancy unless pain or other dysfunction is a concern and 6-8 times during the postpartum phase. Other pelvic floor concerns vary quite a bit in number of sessions.
Pelvic floor therapy is NOT one size fits all...
